I play the role well during the day.
I smile, I work hard, I comfort others. The sunlight, the noise, the busy tasks—they act like a filter, keeping the darkness at bay. For those hours, I almost believe I am fine.
But at 5 PM, when the sun starts to set, the panic sets in.
The streetlights come on, the shadows grow long, and the silence creeps in. All the things I hid during the day—the grief, the fear, the nameless sadness—rush back in like a tidal wave. I am terrified of that hour. Terrified of facing that broken version of myself alone in an empty room.
That is why I made Spice Grove.
I made it to be a companion for the lonely nights.
I wanted that warmth to sit with me, so that even when I couldn't say a word, it could be there, clumsily but firmly telling me—
Don't be afraid. You did nothing wrong. You are just sick.
I am right here, getting through this night with you.
I chose Sweetgrass (Linglingxiang). It has a warmth that makes you want to cry. Like vanilla powder and caramel, with a hint of clean hay. It doesn't talk. It just stays.
I added roots and barks. They are heavy. They hold me up when I am falling.
When the warm smoke wraps around me, the darkness doesn't feel so sharp anymore.
So, if you fear that hour too.
